We usually ask our clients to complete an estate planning questionnaire prior to coming into our office for an estate planning appointment. The questionnaire helps our clients think about their assets and how they want to distribute their estate, who will handle their affairs in the event of incapacity or death, who might be appointed guardian for any minor children, and who can make health care decisions on a client's behalf. Creating estate planning documents puts you in control of distributing your assets or appointing who will make decisions for you. Without estate planning, the state will distribute your property according to Washington's intestate laws, and you will not have any input into who handles your finances or makes health care decisions for you if you become incompetent or incapacitated.
